I was thinking the other day about voices and what different types of voices that are currently on the top 100 and I noticed that there aren't really any people there that are Bass or even Baritone (not including rap which is basically half already). What's kind of sad about this is how much I appreciate a strong deep and powerful voice. From what I've seen recently, it seems that the strong basses have been restricted to obscure indie, covers and pop-country (which is the garbage that most people think of when they hear "country").
I hate the progression into a love of one voice type and one only. Whatever happened to the days where a singer was praised for their overall range rather than just their ability to sing falsetto. I recently stumbled on a band with a singer who has an absolutely stunning baritone voice. They're called The National and if you haven't listened to anything of theirs yet, then I really recommend you check them out.
Another band that has some brilliant powerful vocals is July Talk, though their sound is a bit less sweet sounding. It is very rare nowadays that you find a singer who can capture that rough voice that you'd find from old style jazz or blues singers but the lead singer Peter Dreimanis really captures that style and does an excellent job mixing it in with a sort of Punk-Rock style.
I don't really mean to sound sexist or anything but it is always nice to hear a man singing like a man. The lack of variety in music these days has me scratching my head of how anyone finds the same voice interesting after the billionth time hearing it.
July Talk's best song in my opinion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFwB5ayV0vQ&index=11&list=LLHwIU8xYgR2U1TewhbvoDCQ
