Esports is one of the fastest growing competitive sports in the world, yet some still refuse to call it that. Now why might that happen? Is it ignorance? Conservatism? Disbelief? Possibly, but in my opinion I think it mostly stems from a lack of understanding of the topic at hand.
While most would classify a sport by the physical conditions of the athletes, I much prefer to define it via skill. But even if we were to classify it by physical condition, if you watch a professional Starcraft player their hands are some of the fastest moving and accurate things I've ever seen. In a video linked below, you will see professional Warcraft 3 and StarCraft players talking about APM (actions per minute). Nevertheless a person's skill is what really matters and I feel like not admiring not only the amount of work and practice they put in, but also the sheer natural talent these people have. If a group of 5 is able to make more than 2 million dollars by playing League of Legends, or compete in a television event playing Defense of the Ancients (DOTA 2) then all the power to you. Esports is the future, the fact that so many people refuse to accept it just seems conceded to me.
To be honest with you, when it comes to sports and the likes, I feel like your more physical sports are beginning to die. More and more people have been moving towards Esports over the old standard quota. Of course that is not to say I want to see the more typical sporting events be overrun, but rather I'd much rather Esports and sports to be ran alongside one another. Would it not be a sight to see a group of four playing Rocket League at the Olympics or a huge stadium in order to watch team SoloMid face off against team EnVy in the SMITE world championships? To see some of the biggest stars in the sports world next to your favorite support player would be legendary.
Whether it's due to ignorance or refusal to commit to new things, it really doesn't matter because as the new generation develops, more and more people will devote themselves towards the world of Esports. I have no issue with sports, you enjoy what you enjoy, all I want is the favor returned.
