Remedios Varo's Les Feuilles Mortes is probably one of my favorite paintings of all time. When it comes to psychedelic, surrealist art Varos is easily the top of the line in all possible senses.
When it comes to interpreting her work, it tends to be rather difficult. It is widely known that she often uses similar themes of loneliness and a lone, servile women. This was often to reference the patriarchal oppression the occurred often in the age of which she lived. Tying in with this, the women in the picture is crocheting which would refer to the menial tasks that women were left to do.
The name of the work translates in French to Dead Leaves which we can attribute to the mild overtone of nature that you see in the background as well as the colors used in the piece, both in the background and on the lady in the picture.
Now finally referring to the strange entity standing in the center of the room where if you look close, the yarn is going in the hall and the birds are coming out. With this, we can assume that the greenery in the room is also being caused by the entity. What I believe it represents is a freedom that women of the age didn't have whilst the man is representative of the path they'll have to take in order to gain true freedom.
In my personal opinion, Varo's art always seemed several years behind the time where it would have been taken seriously. She continues to make very female centric ideal that in my opinion was not as big an issue as several other issues of the period.
