I've been playing Piano for about 5 years now, Music Theory for 4 and Alto Saxophone for 3. My understanding of Pentatonic scales, Chord Progressions, Resolves and dissonance is outstanding, but yet, I have no understanding of improvisational Jazz.
Now, don't get me wrong, I've tried. Time and time again I've achieved what a book or a definition may call "Jazz", but for me and anyone with cognoscente knowledge of music can tell that I'm as confused as they are. There is this whole other world of knowledge involved in jazz that I just don't have and no manner of Youtube tutorial, music lesson or theory paper can truly tell you how to make it to a place where I can sit down with a group of musicians and just play.
Coming from a background of more classical music, Jazz seemed like a weird step in my unachievable goal of mastering music, but yet just like a complicated measure in a lengthy piece, I'm stuck, working out any issues I can find so as to be able to move on to the next step. However, unlike a lengthy piece, I'm stuck without a guideline beyond my own imagination.
